Article Review

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

I have been collecting things I have wanted to read for a long time. Articles on freelancing, web design, standards, etc. So I have decided tonight I am going to catch up on all my bookmarked reading and I will post a lil review/synopsis of the better ones.

Blogging

“Where Do You Get Off?” on Freelance Switch is Steve Spatucci’s commentary on what it takes to be called a professional and how some undervalue their status. Good for inspiration for all those casual writers/designers/developers. You ARE important!

“15 Ways to Become an Influential Blogger” by Skellie gives some good advice about how to be a good blogger. Good read for anyone publishing content.

“5 Reasons Why Freelancers Should Blog” from Freelance Switch is a good article for those thinking about getting into blogging to improve their freelance business.

Clients

“Top 10 Ways to Fire the Client From Hell” from Inside CRM outlines 10 types of problem client scenarios and some useful suggestions on how to deal with them in a professional manner.

“Contract Killers” by Andy Budd goes over the “third way” to write client contracts based on target scope and target cost addressing the concerns of both client and supplier. Great read for clients and suppliers who do contract work and are working with different clients, different expectations and different needs.

Inspiration

“Deadlines kill inspiration” by Veerle Pieters is a great blog post giving a little insight into a designers perspective of how deadlines can stiffle creativity and hurt the end product. It doesn’t advocate not having deadlines, but more making tight deadlines or not allotting enough time to the creative process. A good read for clients who hire designers as well as a little ammo for designers who have “everything last minute” clients.

About Lynn Wallenstein

My name is Lynn Wallenstein and I am one of the co-founders of Powered By Geek, a contracting and consulting firm formed by some friends and I who were sick of working 100 hour weeks while our bosses get richer but that is a whole other story. This is where I ramble about all things design, code, project or whatever based both for PBG and for my collection of personal projects.
