Facebook Doesn’t Suck… Your Friends Do

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Ok before I get into it, let me just say I am writing this from the perspective of a user… not a developer. From a developer standpoint I think Facebook is doing a great job and will be doing an even better job if they get the lead out and jump on OpenSocial. I am writing this from the perspective of me actually using Facebook as the type of user I am… a geek.

So Facebook… I do love it. I have pushed all my friends onto using it and have left myspace and never looked back (yeah I know I wasn’t using myspace anyway, but whatever). I love Facebook because all the integrated apps and the uniform layout so I can easily find things on my friends “pages” without having the myspace effect of stupid music of blinking glitter items that throw my mind back to the web 1997.

So why am I mad? Because my friends are idiots. I TRY and use Facebook as a method for centralizing what I am doing in the rest of the world and networking with my friends. Add in a simple messaging system and I would be happy. Everytime I log into Facebook I am greeted with about 10 requests to be a vampire, ninja or some other shit. I have 10 bumper stickets and 100 hotness points… really?? really?!? REALLY?!?!? Ok anyone that knows me KNOWS I would think this is stupid… but honestly WHO THE HELL ACTUALLY ENJOYS THIS. Now not all the apps are bad, I have seen some great ones for finding music, supporting causes, linking peoples interest, but there needs to be a filter for stupidness. I need a filter “please don’t show me anything that you would probably see on a myspace user’s site” or anything in the genre “Hello Kitty”.

Till then, time to weed through the friends list.

My name is Lynn Wallenstein and I am one of the co-founders of Powered By Geek, a contracting and consulting firm formed by some friends and I who were sick of working 100 hour weeks while our bosses get richer but that is a whole other story. This is where I ramble about all things design, code, project or whatever based both for PBG and for my collection of personal projects.
