What I Want From Digg

If you are a geek and haven’t heard of the web site Digg.com you are living under a rock. I am not going to get into what Digg is, if you don’t know, go check out the site. I just wanted to write up a quick post about the things I would like to see in Digg to make things more useable from my perspective and see if anyone agrees with me and maybe get the attention of the Digg devs (and for all I know they have heard this a thousand times and/or are already working on it).

Taggable Posts
I would love the ability to tag or view by tag post items. I like the categorization, but I think it would also be cool to be able to tag posts and view in a cloud and/or RSS view by a tag. This eliminates worry about where to categorize things when they fall into multiple categories as well as lets the user group define the categorization of stories without the “digg people” having to worry about it. As new things emerge, the community will take care of creating and refining the structure without having to have any software changes. Two less important “sub” features I would love to see off of this would be the ability for me to add/modify the tags of the things I digg for me and let those modified tags “create” updated public tags by popularity (think del.icio.us …. think del.icio.us mashup)

Further Breakdown of Categories
I would also love to see a 3rd tier of official Digg categories. Although I personally would use tags most, I don’t think everyone has completely embraced the taggable lifestyle as much as I have. I personally surf the category “Design” and am primarily on the lookout for web design/web dev posts, but often get cluttered in stories about new car designs or the updated design of a coke vending machine. I am sure this is true in other categories as well, an official 3rd tier of categories would address this issue quite well…. maybe even plan a 4th and 5th for growths sake…. you can always read at whatever tier you want.

XFN/FOAF Support
I think any service that supports a social networking aspect (having friends) should support XFN for use in cool apps for finding new friends or even just mapping out connections. Especially if you want to play the Kevin Bacon game with Kevin Rose.

Sidebar of Upcoming Stories
I think I am one of the few people that troll the upcoming stories section of Digg. I would love to see a box with a random selection from the upcoming queue on the section homepage. I think this may get some new people interested in new stories.

Forum for Digg API Devs
I would love a place where those of us who develop tools that use Digg could chat and share.

My Dugg RSS Date/Time
The date/time of My Dugg items should be the time and date I dugg them, not when published. This is a pet peeve of mine as in my lifestream my diggs get lost.

Overall I really like the Digg site, I find it clean and easy to use, but I think these suggestions would make the site a bit more useful.

About Lynn Wallenstein

My name is Lynn Wallenstein and I am one of the co-founders of Powered By Geek, a contracting and consulting firm formed by some friends and I who were sick of working 100 hour weeks while our bosses get richer but that is a whole other story. This is where I ramble about all things design, code, project or whatever based both for PBG and for my collection of personal projects.
