Never Gonna Get a Break
So I really want a Zune. I love the interface, the feature set rocks and anything that supports an all you can eat music option is thumbs up in my book. I have been reading almost everything I can on the Zune because I think it is a fundamental shift in how a major player understands how people think. I am not a Microsoft advocate… I do advocate them over Apple, but I advocate anything over either… specifically Ubuntu, my new favorite toy. This is not going to be be an Apple versus Microsoft debate… noone is every gonna win that because the honest truth is they both suck shit and the operating system should be free…. subsidized by the hardware companies… but whatever. Lets take the Zune away from Microsoft…. if you have the ability to be open minded enough… having the ability to share music with people I meet easily is a FUNDAMENTAL step forward in tieing in the social networking occuring on the web into the real world…. taking it away from the geeks and bringing it to the public. It is a step in the direction that the world needs to go to become truely digital. It isn’t the greatest thing of all time, but it is an aknowledgement that someone is paying attention. Eventually wireless file sharing needs to become as easy as trading a business card… and I don’t mean some ghetto palm pilot IR thing, but the Zune recognizes the desire that people are social creatures… just as something like Last.fm realizes that I want to show people what I listen to and get reccomendations from others…. It also intelligently takes the legalities of not pirating music but allowing a time based/play based sampling period. I want this technology for EVERYTHING and I think any intelligent company should support this as most likely if your shit is good, I will be selling for you. I would love to be like “oh, you want to try out this software? Sure here it is for a couple days” or even just be able to wirelessly share pictures or information with strangers. Online sitting here right now I am sharing my bookmarks with people, the news I read, the music I listen to, the art I like, the projects I am on… you name it, I share it. I am glad to see a device following me down this path.
Now that being said, the Zune will probably be squashed by everyone because it has the backing of “satan” an the Apple fan boys just can’t help but bitch. I don’t get how they don’t see how any competitive device will bring costs down and provide more features. COMPETITION IS GOOD. If anything I hope the Zune just makes the industry realize what people want… sort of the Napster… the actual software sucked shit, but the idea was gold.
